Gough Island

In the middle of the South Atlantic, an ancient volcano rises like a pin prick against a vast blue horizon. In March 2021, I was part of a 4 man crew aboard Pelagic Australis, a 70ft steel hulled expedition yacht, with a mission to deliver 7 scientists and extra supplies onto Gough Island. This was part of an elaborate project to rid the island of invasive eurasian house mice that have been devastating to the millions of sea birds that nest and raise their chick on the island. The 3000nm round trip took 15 days to complete. We had initially planned to stay for 3 days to explore the island after the drop off but unfortunately a big low pressure system prevented us from doing this.
